I could have told myself I needed more time to refine my messaging. That I should wait until I had more subscribers. That I needed more practice.

But at some point, I had to be honest with myself — the only way to get better is to start.

The fear of regret (not doing it) is stronger than the fear of failure (it going terribly).

Last week, I filmed my first podcast. No waiting. No overthinking. Just execution.

I’m a small business owner, just like you. And I practice what I preach. I wholeheartedly believe in SBi3.

  1. Innovate: Keep it simple. No $150/hr recording studio, no perfect script — just a mic, a topic, and a conversation.

  3. Improve: Get feedback. The lighting was terrible, but now I know what to fix, and it cost me nothing to learn that.

This is execution in real-time. Start small. Test fast. Improve as you go.

The biggest mistake small business owners make? Overcommitting before proving an idea works.

  1.  List Your Current Business Problems – What’s taking up your time and energy? Be specific.

  2. Apply the $10,000 Per Hour Test – If an elite operator ignored everything else and solved just one issue, what would it be?

  3. Take Immediate Action – Drop the small fires and go all in on fixing the bottleneck that actually moves the business forward.

Why This Works:

  • Eliminates “fake work” – Stops you from spinning your wheels on low-impact problems.

  • Forces clarity – If a $10,000/hr consultant wouldn’t touch it, neither should you.

  • Drives real results – Keeps inefficiencies from eating away at your business.

Example: A $2M business was stuck tweaking its website for months. When the owner applied the $10,000 per hour test, they realized the real issue was a broken sales process. Once fixed, revenue jumped 15% in 60 days.

Most business owners don’t have a strategy problem. They have a focus problem.

Every business leader faces this question:

👉 Do we push harder on this, or is it time to cut our losses?

The best operators don’t guess — they have a framework.

How to Make the Right Call:

  1. Set a Hard Metric – Define a clear success threshold before you even start (or ASAP, if you already started). Example: “If this new service line doesn’t hit $50K in revenue within 90 days, we pivot.”

  2. Assess Execution vs. Strategy – If execution is weak, fix the execution. If the strategy itself is flawed, pivot the approach.

  3. Cap the Investment – Set a budget ceiling (time, money, or effort). Example: “We’ll test this ad strategy for $15K. If it’s not performing at X ROAS, we move on.”

Why This Matters: Avoiding Chaos & Decision Paralysis

Without a plan, you create chaos:

  • You keep pushing on a bad idea because of sunk costs.

  • You waste time debating instead of executing.

  • You overcommit resources instead of testing efficiently.

Having a clear plan doesn’t mean you can’t deviate — it means you always know what you’re working toward.

High-growth businesses pivot fast and double down hard. The key is knowing when to do so.

  • They spend hours tweaking things that don’t move the needle instead of focusing on execution.

Meanwhile, their biggest competitive advantage — time — is getting burned on inefficiency.

If you’re constantly busy but not making real progress, ask yourself:

  • What’s the highest-value work I could be doing right now?

  • What’s wasting my time that I need to cut?

  • Where can I spend money to buy back time and increase efficiency?

The best business owners aren’t the ones who work the hardest. They’re the ones who spend their time the smartest.
